My work balances between abstraction and figuration. I reduce my observations of landscapes to their inherent lines and depict them in portrait mode. Contrary to the natural field of vision, which is horizontal, I mostly choose a vertical representation. Thus the quiet of horizontals interfere with the dynamics of the vertical plane, and the rather unnatural format creates room for interpretation.
I reduce the classic components of the painting to line and plane. Usually the line is merely a starter to a greater whole, I consider it an autonomous element in the composition. Though my work seems minimal, it takes form layer upon layer. This creates a transparency and reciprocity between foreground and background.
I only use small formats. Due to the theme and its elaboration and the rather fundamental way of painting, the works have a detached appearance. They don’t allow much of a connection. The small format and the sometimes hazy depiction forces the viewer to stand closer and are an invitation to a physical and emotional approach.
