Sammy Slabbinck's

by Xavier Speeleveld

Playfully distorting proportion and cultural context, Belgian artist Sammy Slabbinck’s work comprises surreal collages and illustrations that somewhat unexpectedly combine vintage with contemporary images. Slabbinck likes to play around with different styles and proportions with the aim of creating powerful yet simple visual works that are permeated by a subtle sense of humour. His carefully composed images create startling juxtapositions and present new meanings through a masterful combination of completely heterogenous elements and a clever use of scale and form. An avid collector of magazines and books from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s, the artist takes full advantage of the muted tones and rich textures that he finds in his source material, namely vintage advertisements, photography and print.

Mary Virginia Carmack

by Xavier Speeleveld

About the artist :

The thing about collage is that anyone can do it, but few can do it well. The crucial thing is to balance artful non sequiturs with a kind of coded story, balancing visual with narrative interest. Mary Virginia Carmack is a master of the medium, crafting gorgeous enigmas from paper cut-outs. We detect a hint of Man Ray and a killer sense of color, but mostly a sensibility original enough to turn each image into an illustrated dream.

Artist statement :

My work is a visual play between beauty and tragedy, rhythm and interruption – searching for a sense of order in the overwhelming chaos of life. Two main metaphors I use are those of disguise and pattern. Apart from the obvious masks, I play games of hide and seek with the viewer. Issues are veiled; in the discovery of detail, deceit is revealed and absurdly inverted. My art deals with the typically South African ability to laugh at ourselves, and consequently, to play and take risk. Playfulness is seen in the variety of patterns. The first layer of observation reveals simple decorativeness, but closer looking introduces the heroes who are the personalities that are either super good or super bad. In this lie the acidic hero or smug tyrant and bedfellow of the sad footman. Celebrities and political figures form, in a broader sense, the wallpaper background of our lives. In masking a sense of defeat and despair, all is structured in order, attempting to create sanity and in this, beauty is given the trump card. Beauty affirms our sense of comfort, which is visualized by balance and symmetry and presents us with a sense of warm reassurance.

In the artists words :

It’s important for me to “say” something with my artwork, so for the vast majority of my work there’s a meaning behind them. I usually do this via presenting a “narrative” scene in my collages, like there’s something bigger going on than what’s merely depicted. Sometimes the scene is witty or sarcastic, some times it’s horrific with a sense of danger or urgency, some times it’s chill. I leave it to the viewer’s imagination to fill-in the blanks of the story plot.

Budenko, Collage Artist from Russia

by Fabien Schiettecatte

Anton Bundenko is a collage artist from Russia, working with Onsitegallery in Antwerp. Anton mostly focuses on making the collages and limited prints but also tries more experimental things with the different types of printing and their combinations like serigraphy, acid-printing, decoupage. He collaborates with clothing brands, taking the pictures for the prints and patterns. Because collage prints and applique work got more popular lately, Anton would love to start more collaborations with designers and big brands.

Chiewling

Our Kuala Lumpur based artist CHIEWING : "Finally, I have done my second personal project. Still, they are made by some simple or everyday objects and my hand drawing. And this time, I'm using "Cotton". In this project, most of my thoughts are more on a childhood dream or a child imagination. "

Flore Kunst

by Xavier Speeleveld

Graduated from the Emile Cohl school in 1999, Flore Kunst worked in many fields such as textile design, illustration, graphic design, linocut and photography. Since 2010, She works mainly on collage . She collects old magazines, postcards and other more contemporary sources to create and mix images. Flore never stops the idea what will be the collage before starting, it reveals itself progressively. She lets her eyes walk around all these fragments until, spontaneously and almost magically, the links are created between images who might seem to be opposite at first sight: “I like the idea of providing a new story to the papers forgotten."

Don Suggs - Paradise Prints

by Bruce Vandeweyer

Don Suggs' artistic trademarks are concentric circles of glossy colors against a white or grey background. In his “Paradise Prints” series Suggs combines these circular figures with carefully thought out photographic expositions. Deliberately framing his subjects and leaving an open space, later to be filled with his one of his characteristic abstractions. By doing so he not only tries to capture a contrast between the organic and abstract, but also challenges the spectator to question his own imagination. Is the circle obscuring the beauty of the hidden scenery or is it merely expressing it on a more abstract level?

Larissa Hailyaguado

by Xavier Speeleveld

Larissa Hailyaguado is a Buenos Aires based artist. Her ‘Life Is A Collage’ project began in 2008 and has evolved and expanded to become her principal method of communication. The possibilities of fixed manual collage in the digital age provide exciting opportunities to engage with craft, materials, analysis and outcomes. The limitations of found materials, random and manual tools provide a sharper, more immediate, and more human dynamic than is possible with computer software.

Matthew Craven

by Xavier Speeleveld

We envy the gallery that features the works of New York artist Matthew Craven, who painstakingly inks and collages geometric black and white images onto aged paper. His source imagery reads vaguely familiar, perhaps reminiscent of old Roman or Greek ruins paired alongside patterns from the Peruvian Andes or West African baskets? It’s anyone’s guess after Craven’s done synthesizing together historical and cultural elements from across the globe to create his own minimalistic mythologies
