french designers ronan and erwan bouroullec have announced their first collaboration alongside finnish company iittala for the production of ‘ruutu’, a collection of ten vases available in five sizes and seven different glass colors. when collected and combined, the series of mouth blown borosilicate containers manufacture miniature and seamless installations, which according the bouroullec brothers, ‘creates both the strength and the delicate nature of the glass to come alive.’

Ogilvy Paris  have come up with an innovative way to remind people to drink the recommended 8 glasses of water a day. Designed for Vittel, a french brand of bottled water, the ‘refresh cap’ is a bespoke topper that pops up a tiny red flag every hour to prompt you to take a sip. when you twist the bottle cap shut, a timer autonomously begins, counting down the minutes until your next notification. the device encourages people to stay hydrated throughout the day in a fun and engaging way, promoting good health through design.

Acquiring a new form in its third edition during milan design week, the ‘marble across time’ turkish natural stone art exhibition shifts from the static expression conveyed through brief time snapshots, crystallized into a marmoreal vision, and to a metaphorical representation; take some time for yourself for a journey that starts back in the past and projects itself into the future.

BNKR Arquitetcura

In 2012 mexican studio BNKR arquitetcura built a recycled pavilion that function as the cafeteria for expo CIHAC,the largest architecture and construction exhibition in latin america, which takes place every year in mexico city. built using 5,000 soda crates, the up-cycled pieces aimed to serve as an example for sustainability, not ending up in the trash afterwards, like other temporary structures. when the expo finished, the containers were returned to the soda company to continue their original use and function.The ‘social topography’ project is a similar intervention for the annual book fair in the city of juarez in the mexican state of chihuahua. the requirements were 5,000 soda crates and a group of 30 architecture students to help build the pavilion.

Torafu Architects

In wanting to assist in optimizing one's domestic space, Torafu architects have produced 'cobrina' a series of nine small-sized furniture pieces developed in collaboration with hida sangyo. The aptly named collection ('cobrina' is derived from the japanese term 'koburi-na' which is often used to refer to small or undersized objects), is characterized by rounded edges and slender, slanted legs which makes it almost appear like a small flock of animals.

Fusing the past and future into one calendar, portuguese studio Bitri has created a carefully crafted wooden box with two drawers. The project won a graphics platinum award in 2013, as well as a european design award. the calendar offers a different function to most, the separate compartments contain on one side, a record of the past and on the other, the future.

British illustrator and graphic designer Chris Anderson was commissioned by leeds-based streetwear shop The Chimp Store, to create replicas of their upcoming stocklist of Adidas footwear arriving in 2014. Each scale model has been intricately crafted using 100% recycled corrugated cardboard, featured in interpretations of the superstar shelltoe, zx700, zx8000, campus and even the tennis classic stan smith shoe. from the traditional three stripes to precisely cut out adidas logotypes, each sneaker accurately depicts the original. Seeking for a way to store bikes when they aren’t in use, barcelona-based company Woodloops have created this series of minimalistic wooden accessories, that make the storing of bikes into a featured wall display. ‘bike pin ups’ are produced using wood from sustainably managed forests and each piece is hand-crafted in local workshops surrounding barcelona. The sculptural devices allow people to exhibit their customized bikes easily in a variety of different environments. the pin ups offer useful details such as integrated magnets, hooks to hang keys on, tools or necessary gadgets.

Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec

french designers Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec have collaborated with crystal manufacturer swarovski to develop ‘gabriel chandelier’ a unique LED intervention in the palace of versailles in paris. measuring 12 meters in height and weighing half a tonne, the installation was conceived as the first permanent contemporary piece in the 17th century château. 800 crystal modules compose the suspended lighting system, illuminating the interior fabric of the space using a sequential pattern like magic. threaded around a stainless steel skeleton, the continuous crystal rope floats over the main staircase, glistening during the day, and providing a warm glow at night.

Emmanuelle Moureaux colorfully camouflages chests of drawers to create ‘mille-feuille’ (‘a thousand sheets’ in french). the vibrant storage unit conceived for german furniture brand Schönbuch is composed of stacked MDF, painted in 8, 12 or 21 different colors, depending on the size of the unit, available in 3 sizes of 2, 3, or 4 compartments respectively. each one is hand-built and is a practical work of art for any interior.

Lego has unveiled the first iteration of ‘the LEGO house’ museum by Big. Reportedly to become ‘the best museum ever’ according to bjarke ingels himself, the building will express the ‘systematic creativity’ of the modular brick toys and is projected to attract 250,000 visitors annually. set to open in 2016 in denmark, the museum will use the built form to convey the tenants of LEGO play– stimulated learning and connective thinking.
