Adrian Esparza

by Xavier Speeleveld

With his new work commissioned by The Pérez Art Museum in miami, texas-based artist adrian esparza addresses his experience as a mexican-american raised on the border of the neighboring lands. hHs exhibited piece ‘wake and wonder’ is formed from a serape blanket — a traditional craft object from mexico — pulled apart at its threads and rewoven around nails hammered into the walls of the gallery it occupies. The engaging linear structure creates multi-dimensional, vibrantly colored layers within the space. esparza considers this installation as an evolving self-portrait; the long shawls represent a tradition, and a cultural identity, which has been displaced or lost from its site of origin.

Lita Albuquerque

by Xavier Speeleveld

California-based artist Lita Albuquerque led an expedition to antarctica, near the south pole in the creation of her global installation ‘stellar axis’, a creative enterprise which became the first and largest ephemeral artwork created on the continent. Albuquerque and a team of researchers and astronomers situated 99 fabricated blue spheres on the earth’s icy surface, the placement of each corresponding to the location of one specific stars in the sky above.

Susan Stockwell

by Xavier Speeleveld

Thematically navigating the notions of international connectivity, personal and social history, and global exchange, Susan Stockwell's immersive ‘sail away’ unites these motifs through a single medium: currency. The humble, yet ever essential resource is a commodity of culture and civilization, with varying countries’ conception embedded in antiquity and humanity.

Sonice development

by Xavier Speeleveld

Thousands of painted lines made up of different tones and hues form an increasingly dense landscape of chroma in ‘emerging colorspace’: a robotic drawing installation by german studio sonice development. The autonomously wandering machine scales up and down on vertical surfaces, applying paint to the wall using a marker. following simple algorithmic rules with random elements of spontaneity, the device generates a continuously changing facade that infinitely transforms the interior fabric of the gallery space.

Henrique Oliviera

by Xavier Speeleveld

Brazilian artist Henrique Oliviera's multisensory installation ’parada dos quasólitos’ at Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt is a convergence of space and sculpture. it is a walk-in structure: physical, tactile, and immersive, a disorienting place that temporarily transports the visitor to a realm independent of the gallery walls. the massive cave is built from tapume wood sticks — typical construction materials recycled from the brazilian urban landscape.

Do Ho Su

by Xavier Speeleveld

korean artist do ho suh presents his first solo exhibition at Lehmann Gallery Hong Kong, a site-specific installation of sculptural artworks. the collection is a continuation of his new york specimen series, and consists of six life-size replicas of various household appliances from his personal apartment on west 22nd street in manhattan. a bathtub, toilet, medicine cabinet, radiator, kitchen stove and refrigerator are all structurally rendered in full-scale, using the artist’s signature polyester material. The near-translucent fabrications reveal each item’s inner workings, exposing the technical, semi-architectural framework of their build. The almost weightless wire structures are an extension of his study of themes surrounding cultural displacement, the establishment of relationships within new environments, and memories as both physical and metaphorical manifestations.

Lord Xhitney

by Xavier Speeleveld

Contrary to what the name suggests, Lord Whitney is not an upper class gentleman. It’s in fact a name of the design collective formed by university friends, Amy Lord and Rebekah Whitney. Lord Whitney span the area of Set Design, Art Direction and Prop Making. They work with clients to conceptualise and develop visual ideas for projects; which they then design and make. This includes set design, costume design, props styling or anything in between.

Henrique Oliviera

by Xavier Speeleveld

A complex network of organic material invades the architecture at the palais de tokyo in paris, in brazilian artist Henrique Oliviera's  'baitogogo'. The installation is a matrix of sculptural vegetation -- unraveling, twisting, and plunging from existing pillars and beams. Oliveira, known for his architectural integrations, manipulates the space by both extending and multiplying the columns, encasing the viewer in a dizzying circuit of knotted, root-like material. in a communion of urban design, plant life, and biology, the artist generates an immense audience reaction to the unexpected fusion of sculpture and space.

Mike Pelletier

by Xavier Speeleveld

This was a collaborative project with Geoffrey Lillemon for the window at Random Studio in Amsterdam. The main graphic inspiration for this project was Lotte Reiniger’s 1926’s film “The Adventures of Prince Achmed”. The artist wanted to create a physical, kinetic sculpture inspired by the strong graphic silhouettes found in her films. The sculptures were created from laser-cut plywood and we used custom dc and servo motor controllers to drive the animations. For the window installation they used a LCD projector to rear-project on the window. This gave the psychedelic cats an animated backdrop for the silhouettes, as well the opportunity to add some extra animated effects to the silhouettes such as eye blinks. They coated the windows with lacquer to create the projection surface.

Prove di Stampa

by Xavier Speeleveld

Prove di stampa is the project presented by Diego Grandi for the exhibition of Salone Satellite 15th year celebrations. A print laboratory was be held in a 25 m2 area, a setting made of magnifying lenses, colour gradients and typographic memories. The space is a summary on digital printing experienced through mutant surfaces: colour shades, defined by different white grids, create an installation based on the CMYK system. Laminate, ceramic and wallpaper express their possibility of customi- zation and the opportunities of surface design nowadays.

Big Air Package
Gasometer oberhausen, Germany
To be visited untill 30 december 2013

In his first major public work since the death of his partner jeanne-claude in2009, christo's 'big air package' is already reported to be both the largest ever inflated frameless envelope and the most expansive indoor sculpture ever created. while the artist typically works at the monumental scale of the city or building, the 90 meter high inflatable boasts a volume of 177,000 cubic meters and uses 20,350 square meters of semitransparent polyester fabric as well as 4,500 meters of rope. despite lacking a skeleton, the 5 ton form fills the interior of a former gas tank, amplifying the ethereal quality of the space with diffused light. christo describes the experience as 'virtually swimming in light' as a result of the vast expanses of fabric.
