Alvaro Catalan de Ocon

by Xavier Speeleveld

Engaging the local community to turn the containers for liquids into ceiling lamps. With the help of the asociación artisanías de colombia (an organization dedicated to the preservation of colombian crafts), Alvaro collaborated with two distinct groups of artisans from the cauca region who had been displaced by guerilla war to bogota. Together they have been giving new life and shape to the PET bottle since 2012, which gave rise to PETlamp.org

Ferestec

by Xavier Speeleveld

I like Feréstec works and how he combines painting, footage and other media with graphic user interface to compose the final layout or generate numerous patterns of details of the same piece.

Simon Katan

by Xavier Speeleveld

Simon Katan is an artist and coder with a background in composition who combines electronic music, live animation, interaction, and social gaming. His work incorporates hidden mechanisms, emergent behaviour, paradox, self-reference, inconsistency, abstract humour, absurdity and wonder. God Over Djinn is a piece for live animation and synthesised sound composition that draws on our intuitive understanding of the physical world.

Eno Henze

by Xavier Speeleveld

The installation draws upon a long history of psychedelic experiments and optical illusions, especially Marcel Duchamps rotoreliefs and 60ies-70ies light shows and Op-Art. It revisits these attempts to manipulate and distort human perception with today’s technological means. The space is defined by a number of circular screens that show an evolving, rotating ‘kinetic light’ animation solely based on circular shapes and segments. Together with the loop- and noise-based music of Audion (Matthew Dear) this creates an hypnotic, timeless space.

Prove di Stampa

by Xavier Speeleveld

Prove di stampa is the project presented by Diego Grandi for the exhibition of Salone Satellite 15th year celebrations. A print laboratory was be held in a 25 m2 area, a setting made of magnifying lenses, colour gradients and typographic memories. The space is a summary on digital printing experienced through mutant surfaces: colour shades, defined by different white grids, create an installation based on the CMYK system. Laminate, ceramic and wallpaper express their possibility of customi- zation and the opportunities of surface design nowadays.

Max Zorn

by Xavier Speeleveld

For all who have never heard of tape art before…  first of all, yes, the artwork you see on this video is only made of brown packing tape, however, before I start to bore you with long explanations how the artist cut and stick layer by layer on pieces of Plexiglas, better check out one of the making-of-videos.

Top Shop

by Xavier Speeleveld

Top Shop is still a hell of a shop concept. In the vitrine a wheel can be rotated to change the mannequin in focus at the front .The iconic circular shape draws the eye from the exit of oxford circus tube station London. The place to be for fashion lovers

Lelo

by Xavier Speeleveld

The overwhelming majority of existing products rely on just two senses: sight and touch. however, LELO believes it’s time to extend the possibilities of design by activating the senses of smell, taste and sound, with the goal of proving that true pleasure is multi-sensory.Applicants are encouraged to discover the vibrancy of pleasure through design, exploring all materials, possibilities of technology and what it really means to feel good. while LELO’s expertise is sensual pleasure, the company is in search of what other possibilities remain unexplored. In essence, the LELO design award provides a chance for designers to give a personal interpretation of pleasure that pushes sensory boundaries.

Yu Jian

by Xavier Speeleveld

Since ancient times, people have enjoyed bamboo as a material not only for aesthetic reasons, but also for its outstanding function. A strong and rich wood which can be grown quickly, today, bamboo is being employed for all types of building and product applications. In observing this, designer yu jian has developed a set of ten stationary objects called 'empty bamboo'. each item takes a hollowed bamboo stem--of varying diameters--as its body. the natural material is combined with metal parts which speak to the function of each piece, resulting in a family of aesthetically beautiful and functional devices, from a pencil case to a tape dispenser, USB hub to a desk clock.

Robert Howsare

by Xavier Speeleveld

The “Drawing Apparatus” is probably one of the more simplistic drawing machines I’ve ever posted here, but that doesn’t mean that it’s outcome is less interesting. A great project by Robert Howsare.

Eiko

by Xavier Speeleveld

Looking at the work of Estonian illustrator, graphic designer and art director Eiko Ojala, we have a hard time to imagine it’s just flat pieces of paper. Even when printed, his paper works have a certain dynamic added to his otherwise wonderful illustrative style.Drawing on over 8 years of experience, Ojala has mainly focused his talents towards being featured in books and magazines. His subjects range from portraits, to series’ of forest scenes and minimalist nudes, always transforming seemingly simple concepts into beautiful pieces of art.

A million Times

by Xavier Speeleveld

A Million Times” is a new project by humans since 1982. It’s similar to their The Clock Clock project, this time they’ve used 288 clocks which can be controlled by an iPad. We’ve seen stuff like this before, but it’s still mesmerizing.

Cykno

by Xavier Speeleveld

The idea that electtric bikes have to look, well, like regular modern bikes mostly goes out the window with its unveiling. A vintage style design combined with high tech, the new Cykno Bike is just as much a work of art as it is a means of transportation. The Cykno is the brainchild of Italian engineer Bruno Greppi and designer Luca Scopel. The rather unusual seat, according to the bike’s makers, sits atop a stainless steel blade and is done out in fancy leathers. These same leathers are used to cover the handlebars and other parts of the bike frame. The central motor with latest technology is linked to a lithium polymer battery with high energy density.

Maruni Collection

by Xavier Speeleveld

We discovered a very tactile Japanese brand on the Salone Del Mobile named Maruni. The maruni collection continues its dedication to presenting a refined aesthetic sense and japanese craftsmanship through a small series of wood furniture, developed under the direction of naoto fukasawa. this year, the company presented fukasawa's new folding chair--which envelopes the concept of his 'hiroshima' furniture series--his 'malta' table and 'asian' bench and stool at the salone del mobile 2013.
