Bureau Betak

by Xavier Speeleveld

To house the christian dior spring/summer 2014 runway show set in the prestine gardens of the musée rodin, paris-based creative agency bureau betak has designed a gaudi-esque, smooth white sanctuary for the couture showcase. The exterior skin of the structure is clad in a neon, orange reflective façade — an abrupt juxtaposition to the serene, manicured landscape that surrounds it.

Rino Stefano

by Xavier Speeleveld

We simply had to share ‘Beauty’, a truly stunning animated video by Italian animator and director Rino Stefano Tagliafierro. Released in early January 2014, the video created by animating masterpieces of Western art (namely paintings from the Renaissance and subsequent eras all the way through to the end of the 19th century), is a thoughtful meditation on the cycle of human life, and how youth and beauty inevitably give way to death and decay. In what could be described as a ‘Memento Mori’ of our times, Tagliafierro’s video tells the same story of life and death just as the Masters that have come before him, this time through the use of digital animation.

I can't catalogue these visions, for most, mercifully, are blurred by morning, leaving only a vague uneasiness and a reluctance to be alone even in the brightest sunshine. Beautifull.

BNKR Arquitetcura

by Xavier Speeleveld

In 2012 mexican studio BNKR arquitetcura built a recycled pavilion that function as the cafeteria for expo CIHAC,the largest architecture and construction exhibition in latin america, which takes place every year in mexico city. built using 5,000 soda crates, the up-cycled pieces aimed to serve as an example for sustainability, not ending up in the trash afterwards, like other temporary structures. when the expo finished, the containers were returned to the soda company to continue their original use and function. The ‘social topography’ project is a similar intervention for the annual book fair in the city of juarez in the mexican state of chihuahua. the requirements were 5,000 soda crates and a group of 30 architecture students to help build the pavilion.

Yoko Nagayama & associates

by Xavier Speeleveld

Holy wow! Seriously, don’t act like you’re not impressed. Is this not one of the most incredible interiors you have ever seen? Yuko Nagayama & Associates with landscape designer Toshiya Ogino have created this gobsmacking showroom for the Japanese leatherwear company Sisii in Kobe, Japan. The designers have literally turned the space upside-down and inside-out, crafting a completely unconventional interior by breaking many design rules. And we love that, don’t we? But only when someone who knows what they are doing does it.
