TURKISH NATURAL STONE

by Xavier Speeleveld

Acquiring a new form in its third edition during milan design week, the ‘marble across time’ turkish natural stone art exhibition shifts from the static expression conveyed through brief time snapshots, crystallized into a marmoreal vision, and to a metaphorical representation; take some time for yourself for a journey that starts back in the past and projects itself into the future.

Bureau Betak

by Xavier Speeleveld

To house the christian dior spring/summer 2014 runway show set in the prestine gardens of the musée rodin, paris-based creative agency bureau betak has designed a gaudi-esque, smooth white sanctuary for the couture showcase. The exterior skin of the structure is clad in a neon, orange reflective façade — an abrupt juxtaposition to the serene, manicured landscape that surrounds it.

Rino Stefano

by Xavier Speeleveld

We simply had to share ‘Beauty’, a truly stunning animated video by Italian animator and director Rino Stefano Tagliafierro. Released in early January 2014, the video created by animating masterpieces of Western art (namely paintings from the Renaissance and subsequent eras all the way through to the end of the 19th century), is a thoughtful meditation on the cycle of human life, and how youth and beauty inevitably give way to death and decay. In what could be described as a ‘Memento Mori’ of our times, Tagliafierro’s video tells the same story of life and death just as the Masters that have come before him, this time through the use of digital animation.

I can't catalogue these visions, for most, mercifully, are blurred by morning, leaving only a vague uneasiness and a reluctance to be alone even in the brightest sunshine. Beautifull.

BNKR Arquitetcura

by Xavier Speeleveld

In 2012 mexican studio BNKR arquitetcura built a recycled pavilion that function as the cafeteria for expo CIHAC,the largest architecture and construction exhibition in latin america, which takes place every year in mexico city. built using 5,000 soda crates, the up-cycled pieces aimed to serve as an example for sustainability, not ending up in the trash afterwards, like other temporary structures. when the expo finished, the containers were returned to the soda company to continue their original use and function. The ‘social topography’ project is a similar intervention for the annual book fair in the city of juarez in the mexican state of chihuahua. the requirements were 5,000 soda crates and a group of 30 architecture students to help build the pavilion.

Yoko Nagayama & associates

by Xavier Speeleveld

Holy wow! Seriously, don’t act like you’re not impressed. Is this not one of the most incredible interiors you have ever seen? Yuko Nagayama & Associates with landscape designer Toshiya Ogino have created this gobsmacking showroom for the Japanese leatherwear company Sisii in Kobe, Japan. The designers have literally turned the space upside-down and inside-out, crafting a completely unconventional interior by breaking many design rules. And we love that, don’t we? But only when someone who knows what they are doing does it.

Paper Houses

by Xavier Speeleveld

Despite its constant role in our day-to-day lives, architecture is still seen by many as a closed profession which remains out of touch with the lives of the general public. seeking to challenge these perceptions, paperhouses – founded by architect joana pacheco – is a scheme which makes contemporary residential architecture freely and readily available. the program aims to stimulate debate and encourage collaboration among designers, clients and builders.

i Clue Design

by Xavier Speeleveld

Korean designer lee jinyoung of "I Clue Design" has created an open solution for DIY shoes titled, the ‘klem project’. The idea was developed while working as a design expert engaged in a technology project for SBS hope television, where he noticed that people living in deprived conditions suffered from a significant lack of daily necessities. The communities depended on foreign aid for more than 40% of their total living expenses, however research reveals that a much better life would be created if they were able to make food using materials bought from locals, not by the aid organizations. Many children in africa are forced to go barefoot, making them vulnerable and exposed to the environment, which in turn harms their feet. This often causes infections that can lead to a secondary infection without appropriate medical treatment. The ‘klem’ shoes hug the foot and use a minimal amount of fabric along with a piece of recycled tire. the ‘open design’ concept enables anyone to make their own, improving people’s living quality and giving a sense of independence.

Isaie Bloch

by Xavier Speeleveld

The 'karosta [kube]' by UK artist isaie bloch have won second prize in an architectural competition for the homemade dessert and liepaja city council. The brief called for the design of a public building in karosta, a former military town in the south-west of latvia. Karosta's urban space is defined as a vast open terrain with unique objects or artefacts, adding new elements with strong social interactions. despite the request to redevelop the complete site and add a big cultural centre, the project deliberately maintains the existing fabric of garages and storage areas already located there.

Torafu Architects

by Xavier Speeleveld

In wanting to assist in optimizing one's domestic space, Torafu architects have produced 'cobrina' a series of nine small-sized furniture pieces developed in collaboration with hida sangyo. The aptly named collection ('cobrina' is derived from the japanese term 'koburi-na' which is often used to refer to small or undersized objects), is characterized by rounded edges and slender, slanted legs which makes it almost appear like a small flock of animals.
