Adrian Esparza

by Xavier Speeleveld

With his new work commissioned by The Pérez Art Museum in miami, texas-based artist adrian esparza addresses his experience as a mexican-american raised on the border of the neighboring lands. hHs exhibited piece ‘wake and wonder’ is formed from a serape blanket — a traditional craft object from mexico — pulled apart at its threads and rewoven around nails hammered into the walls of the gallery it occupies. The engaging linear structure creates multi-dimensional, vibrantly colored layers within the space. esparza considers this installation as an evolving self-portrait; the long shawls represent a tradition, and a cultural identity, which has been displaced or lost from its site of origin.

Jacob Ring

by Xavier Speeleveld

Jacob Ring (b.1987, Auckland, New Zealand) creates experimental photographic works. Considering scenes that are unmonumental in occurrence, the works become vast in referential impact. Much of his work is concerned with portraying multiple layers of reality, and an image is often built through repeated experiments in process, rather than captured. Ring is a chromesthete, affected by the sound to vision variety of the neurological condition synaesthesia. Visualising sound as colour and imagery is a trait that constantly influences his practice at a core level. Jacob currently lives and works in Sydney.

The city of lijiang, china, is known historically as a trading settlement marked by bridges and canals activated by the presence and utility of water. Local practice atelier li xiaodong created the ‘water house’ at the base of the adjacent yulong mountain, designed to honor the ancient character of the city: water. the home consists of several internal/external courtyards and pools that, while preserving a sense of privacy, also offer the experience of the surrounding landscape and view of the city.

Marl Wagner

by Xavier Speeleveld

Using myriad fragments of legitimate monetary bills, american artist Mark Wagner intricately crafts collages that speak to the cultural, economic, and political roles that currently play in contemporary society. aAblade and glue are the artist’s primary tools, as he cuts and tears away morsels of U.S. Paper dollars and reorganizes them into complex and ornate visuals. Materializing portraits, landscapes, and historical scenes, wagner transforms the icon of capitalism into representational snapshots, from the story of the founding fathers, to mythological tales.

Sammy Slabbinck's

by Xavier Speeleveld

Playfully distorting proportion and cultural context, Belgian artist Sammy Slabbinck’s work comprises surreal collages and illustrations that somewhat unexpectedly combine vintage with contemporary images. Slabbinck likes to play around with different styles and proportions with the aim of creating powerful yet simple visual works that are permeated by a subtle sense of humour. His carefully composed images create startling juxtapositions and present new meanings through a masterful combination of completely heterogenous elements and a clever use of scale and form. An avid collector of magazines and books from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s, the artist takes full advantage of the muted tones and rich textures that he finds in his source material, namely vintage advertisements, photography and print.

Olaf Breuning

by Xavier Speeleveld

The oeuvre of  Olaf Breuning can be categorized as a species of performance art — staged, produced, and carefully directed to achieve a very specific photographic, often humorous result. In the case of ‘color wheels’, the swiss visual artist has introduced a familiar toy into the scene — a pinwheel — the humble, childhood apparatus made of a folded colored paper attached to a stick at its axle with a pin. when blown on by a person or the wind, complex whirlings take place, materializing as kaleidoscopic blurs in space. Breuning sets up a series of the rotating rainbows fixed to rigid horizontal and vertical beams. All at once the wheels are spun, and the ensuing image captured is a whimsical and surrealistic, yet manmade, vision.

Ann Bennet

by Xavier Speeleveld

Using her own skin as a canvas, british artist Eliza Bennett  has realized a self-inflicted sculpture, woven into the palm of her hand. Considering the flesh as a base material, bennett carefully stitches patterns and lines into the epidermis of her body using colored thread; ‘a woman’s work is never done’ results as an incredibly worn-looking hand, overworked and fatigued. by using intricate embroidery techniques — traditionally used to symbolize femininity — and applying it to a context of its opposite, bennett challenges the pre-conceived notion that ‘women’s work’ is light and easy.
