Yoko Nagayama & associates

by Xavier Speeleveld

Holy wow! Seriously, don’t act like you’re not impressed. Is this not one of the most incredible interiors you have ever seen? Yuko Nagayama & Associates with landscape designer Toshiya Ogino have created this gobsmacking showroom for the Japanese leatherwear company Sisii in Kobe, Japan. The designers have literally turned the space upside-down and inside-out, crafting a completely unconventional interior by breaking many design rules. And we love that, don’t we? But only when someone who knows what they are doing does it.

Paper Houses

by Xavier Speeleveld

Despite its constant role in our day-to-day lives, architecture is still seen by many as a closed profession which remains out of touch with the lives of the general public. seeking to challenge these perceptions, paperhouses – founded by architect joana pacheco – is a scheme which makes contemporary residential architecture freely and readily available. the program aims to stimulate debate and encourage collaboration among designers, clients and builders.

Isaie Bloch

The 'karosta [kube]' by UK artist isaie bloch have won second prize in an architectural competition for the homemade dessert and liepaja city council. The brief called for the design of a public building in karosta, a former military town in the south-west of latvia. Karosta's urban space is defined as a vast open terrain with unique objects or artefacts, adding new elements with strong social interactions. despite the request to redevelop the complete site and add a big cultural centre, the project deliberately maintains the existing fabric of garages and storage areas already located there.

Seven years after Frank Gehry's  original plans for the los angeles grand avenue project were declined, developer Related Companies has once again turned to the renowned architect to establish the three acre site. The new $650 million USD scheme was submitted to city officials for approval on november 25th, and is intended to form an important part of the city’s emerging cultural district, injecting vibrancy through restaurants, shops and other areas of recreation. the proposal promises welcoming public spaces, opening access routes through the site to adjacent landmarks, including rafael moneo’s ‘cathedral of our lady of the angels’, ‘the broad’ designed by diller scofidio + renfro, and gehry’s own ‘disney hall’.

Ryue Nishizawa

by Xavier Speeleveld

Born from a creative collaboration between architect ryue nishizawa and design office nendo, the small ‘roof and mushrooms’ pavilion overlooks the campus of kyoto university of art and design. A single, undulating roof contours down a steep hill along kyoto’s eastern edge, moderately inclined to mirror the angle of the site. dipping beneath its far-reaching wooden dimensions, visitors realize that the overhead panel also translates into a wall at its base. maintaining his trademark aesthetic of luminous and ethereal architecture, nishizawa’s scheme for the pavilion creates a spatial experience that is intended to remind visitors of walking in the mountains, blurring the boundary between interior and exterior space.

mA-style Architects

by Xavier Speeleveld

Konichiwa! Today we’re south of Mount Fuji in the Shizouka Prefecture of Japan, to look at a house so good I wish I’d thought of it myself. This little slice of simplicity is by mA-Style Architects, and the photographs come from Kai Nakamura. I’m not sure who supplied the child but goodness what a lot of reading they’re getting through. This is not a big house, but a deft hand has made it spacious. A lot of this is down to the central courtyard (my feelings about courtyard houses have previously been made plain) which pours daylight into the core of the house, where it washes those brilliant white walls and brings out the warm tones of the timber. As with all courtyards it’s the view across that animates the space either side. And it’s a beautiful thing if, when there aren’t great views to the outside world, to create great views within the house.
