Lu Cong

by Xavier Speeleveld

Lu Cong was born in Shanghai, in February 1978.  He immigrated to the United States in 1989 at the age of 11.  After graduating from the University of Iowa with degrees in Biology and Art in 2000, Lu chose to pursue portrait art over medicine.  His early works were large and sensational, though they were painted with exaggerated melodrama and pathos, his keen insight and sensitivity towards his subjects were nonetheless evident.  Between 2003 and 2007, Lu was recognized by a number of art publications as a notable emerging artist.  Since then, Lu has developed a distinctive look that many has regarded as an original approach to figurative realism.  His portraits do not simply capture the physical or emotional likeness of the subject, rather they beckon to establish an authentic engagement - interaction that ensues when one comes face to face with the sensual, the inexplicable, and the unsettling.

Bence Bakonyi

by Xavier Speeleveld

How much is our environment forming our personality? How much can you prescind from its medium examining the individual? The photographs of Transform can be considered to be a straightforward commitment besides the inseparability of the individual and the environment.

Bence Bakonyi

by Xavier Speeleveld

Bakonyi Bence is revealing moments for us by not saying anything about them. It is unsolvable what is going on in the pictures, where is the boundary between reality and fiction. The delicate absurdity of the moments of the photo-series Nameless is accompanied by ease that turns our attention from searching for explanations to the liberation of movements appearing in the photographs.

Further interesting Events apart from Berlin Art Week:

http://berliner-liste.org

"The BERLINER LISTE will be held from September 19th to 22nd in central Berlin’s Kraftwerk complex. Now in its tenth year, the art-fair presents galleries, project groups and individual artists whose work is still in an affordable price range in the unique, raw and urban atmosphere of Kraftwerk, formerly a heat and power station."

"CONTURBANARIES is a platform for the internationally popular Berlin (Urban) Art scene. Artists, galleries, publishers and activists present themselves together in a curated exhibition space. In the 2500 m² you will find the Berlin originals together with their international friends. Because of course, Berlin is no longer an island. Though it is internationally recognised as being one of the most impulsively advanced of art scenes for young creators. Here, they are able to present themselves."

Mary Virginia Carmack

by Xavier Speeleveld

About the artist :

The thing about collage is that anyone can do it, but few can do it well. The crucial thing is to balance artful non sequiturs with a kind of coded story, balancing visual with narrative interest. Mary Virginia Carmack is a master of the medium, crafting gorgeous enigmas from paper cut-outs. We detect a hint of Man Ray and a killer sense of color, but mostly a sensibility original enough to turn each image into an illustrated dream.

Karin Miller

Artist statement :

My work is a visual play between beauty and tragedy, rhythm and interruption – searching for a sense of order in the overwhelming chaos of life. Two main metaphors I use are those of disguise and pattern. Apart from the obvious masks, I play games of hide and seek with the viewer. Issues are veiled; in the discovery of detail, deceit is revealed and absurdly inverted. My art deals with the typically South African ability to laugh at ourselves, and consequently, to play and take risk. Playfulness is seen in the variety of patterns. The first layer of observation reveals simple decorativeness, but closer looking introduces the heroes who are the personalities that are either super good or super bad. In this lie the acidic hero or smug tyrant and bedfellow of the sad footman. Celebrities and political figures form, in a broader sense, the wallpaper background of our lives. In masking a sense of defeat and despair, all is structured in order, attempting to create sanity and in this, beauty is given the trump card. Beauty affirms our sense of comfort, which is visualized by balance and symmetry and presents us with a sense of warm reassurance.

In the artists words :

It’s important for me to “say” something with my artwork, so for the vast majority of my work there’s a meaning behind them. I usually do this via presenting a “narrative” scene in my collages, like there’s something bigger going on than what’s merely depicted. Sometimes the scene is witty or sarcastic, some times it’s horrific with a sense of danger or urgency, some times it’s chill. I leave it to the viewer’s imagination to fill-in the blanks of the story plot.

Ashley Blanton

by Xavier Speeleveld

Her current body of work contains the inky interiors of a nonlinear narrative, a story which is told on and across the surface of old book pages which have been lovingly, sometimes fitfully, removed from their spines. The pages contain the folds, fingerprints, stains, and scars of a story that is anonymous yet archetypal, morbid yet metamorphic.

Grove - iPhone protector form skateboards

by Xavier Speeleveld

A 50-piece limited edition series, "the Grove skateboard iPhone cases" are created from old skateboard decks. The line is a collaboration that artisan case creators Grove undertook with lindsay jo holmes, which repurposes skateboards for jewelry and accessories. the year-long project involved the slicing and sanding of 300 skateboards into layered strips, which were then hand-selected for colour coordination and glued together to form individual blocks from which the iPhone cases could be cut.the cases themselves are packaged in bamboo boxes with the layered skateboard panels inset into their ends.

I would love to have these.

Parasite Farm

by Xavier Speeleveld

The 'parasite farm' by Charlotte Dieckmann and Nils Ferber is an indoor compost system that can be easily integrated into your current living environment. The designers' own words: today 88% of germany's population lives in cities and only 5.8% of the country's cultivated land is farmed ecologically. While most fruits and vegetables have become available all year round we are loosing touch with how it was grown, harvested and transported. The expensive, highly compacted urban area doesn't leave much room for agricultural practices and not everybody has access to a balcony or garden. our answer to that question is the 'parasite farm', a system that enables you to compost your biological waste, produce humus soil and to grow your own vegetables and herbs - all within your apartment!
